Yellow striped disease prevention on red onions

Yellow mottle is caused by a type of virus such as onion yellow dwarf virus, leek yellow stripe virus, and shollot latent virus.
Infection of each of these viruses varies. These viruses can attack singly or together.Historically, yellow stripes were recorded for the first time in West-United States around 1916.Then it turns out that this disease attack not only occurs in western Virginia, but also found in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Britain, the Soviet Union, France and Germany. In Indonesia, this disease is spread in onion production centers such as Majalengka, Cirebon, Brebes, Tegal, and Madura. The results of the institute's horticultural research institute said the percentage of affected plants was around 25-26%.
Symptoms
Yellow spots are easily seen on the leaves of plants that become small, there are pale yellow or green lines extending in the direction of the leaves with yellow or pale green which will appear when approached.
Plant growth is also infertile, looks like a nutrient deficiency. When the attack is very severe the number of leaves is very little
The symptoms of this disease will not appear in the tubers that are harvested, making it difficult to distinguish healthy tubers from those that are sick.

The contagious insect
This disease virus is transmitted to onion plants by aphids Myzus ascalonicum, which is about 1.5-2 mm.M.ascalonicum has a slightly blackish color and lives clustered on the shallot plant.
M.persicae, A gossypii light green to slightly yellowish and live clustered on chili or cucumber leaves. These lice rarely live clustered on onions.Although not as a host plant, but onions can contract the disease carried by the lice.
Transmission of the virus occurs when onions are planted together with chili or cucumber plants.

How to control it
Control measures to suppress attacks of yellow spots are as follows:

  1. Selection of seed tubers. Selection of seed tubers is done since the plants are still growing in the field. The way is by giving a mark or mark on a healthy plant that will be used as seeds. Harvest is done separately between the bulbs and the bulbs.
  2.  Nursery area. It is recommended that the area for planting shallots is separated from the planting area for consumption purposes.
  3.  Observation in the field. When there are symptoms of an attack, the affected plants should be immediately revoked and destroyed so as not to spread to other plants.
  4.  Do not be intercropped. Shallots should never be intercropped with chili or cucumber.
  5.  Protection measures. For protection from insect vectors, plants should be sprayed regularly with Curacron or Bayrucil insecticides according to the dosage in the package.
  6. The use of seeds is virus-free. Planting seeds from seeds is one of the best ways, because the seeds do not inherit the virus even though they come from sick plants.
